The awards season heated up today with the nominations announcement of the 2013 Oscars. Nine films made the list of Best Picture nominations.

“Zero Dark Thirty”, “Beasts of the Southern Wild”, “Silver Linings Playbook”, “Lincoln”, “Les Miserables”, “Life of Pi”, “Amour”, “Django Unchained”, and “Argo.”

Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln” is in the lead with 12 nominations.

The field for Best Actor nods this year is very tight with Daniel Day-Lewis for “Lincoln”, Denzel Washington for “Flight”, Hugh Jackman, “Les Miserables”. Bradley Cooper, “Silver Linings Playbook”, and Joaquin Phoenix, “The Master.”

The Best Actress Oscar nods include Emmanuelle Riva for “Amour”; at 85 years old she is the oldest to-date performer in this category, along with Quvenzhane Wallis, for “Beasts of the Southern Wild”, who at 9 years old is the youngest nominee.  Naomi Watts is also nominated for “The Impossible”, Jessica Chastain, “Zero Dark Thirty”, and Jennifer Lawrence, “Silver Linings Playbook”.

Now for the snubs. One of the more surprising snubs this year is Kathryn Bigelow in the Best Director category for “Zero Dark Thirty”.  It’s considered a huge snub when a film is nominated for Best Picture and the director is not nominated. The 2013 Oscars handled the same snub to Ben Affleck for Best Director, while his film “Argo” received the Best Picture nod.

In the Best Actor category, the snub buzz is around Leonardo DiCaprio for “Django Unchained” and Nicole Kidman’s snub for Best Supporting Actress for “The Paperboy”.

Follow me down the red carpet this season as I greet the nominees, guests, and of course the big winners of all the awards ceremonies, including the upcoming 2013 Oscar Awards.
